Starting in late 1958, they began their television journey, and, just as every community has an evil villain, they introduced a person named Gargamel, who has a wicked desire to capture and outsmart the Smurfs.

The Smurfs live in their bright, friendly environments, deep in the forest, in their peculiarly shaped houses, living in harmony; their homes of choice are mushrooms. At the start of every episode, the Smurfs attempt a unity and harmony resolution that includes the desires of every character to outsmart Gargamel or achieve a specific unity and harmony goal.

The blue characters have small, circular bodies and are fully outfitted in white caps and trousers. They are incredible and straightforward designs that are easily recognized by any generation. Smurf culture and the bright environments surrounding their home have sought, and continue to pursue, cultural universality by representing values of unity and teamwork to all audiences. Smurf culture began as a comic strip and has continued since the 80s, with books, toys, and culture growing alongside it.

Sonic’s design was built from a mash-up of cultural elements and themes from 90s popular culture, including punk rock and speedy animals, which, in all honesty, was dead in the animation industry of the period.  Sonic’s red, branded sneakers were fast and still are a recognizable part of him.  Sonic rapidly traversed levels, defeating and capturing the rebel characters who were a symptom of Sony’s competitors’ antagonistic gaming, incarnated in Dr. Eggman, who captured the support and admiration of the growing gaming community.
